The Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, distributed nomadic kits to beneficiaries on August 4 under the LAHDC council subsidy scheme for the year 2024–25.

The kits — which include tents, tarpaulins, torches, milk churner sets, machines, batteries, inverters, and solar panels — were provided at a 75% subsidy. Now in its second year, the initiative aims to support and encourage yak herders outside the Changthang subdivision to adopt and sustain yak rearing practices, thereby enhancing their livelihoods.

Present at the distribution event were Tsering Angchok, Deputy Chairman, LAHDC-Leh; Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, Executive Councillor (Animal/Sheep Husbandry), LAHDC-Leh; Kunzang Lotus, Councillor, Hunder Constituency; Dr. Mohd Ismail, Director, Animal/Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries Departments, UT Ladakh; and Dr. Stanzin Rabgais, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Leh.

Yak husbandry plays a vital role in sustainable development in Ladakh. It supports the livelihoods, ecology, and cultural heritage of high-altitude communities. Yaks provide essential resources such as milk, butter, cheese, meat, wool, hides, and dung for fuel, making them indispensable to the region's socio-economic and environmental fabric.
