Yoga meets Sowa-Rigpa: ‘Sam Yoga’ celebrates healing science in Leh

As part of the ongoing week-long celebrations for the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025, the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre (MIMC), in collaboration with the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR) and LAHDC Leh, organized a special event titled “Sam Yoga – Fusion of Healing Science” on June 16 at the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa, Leh.

The event aimed to highlight the synergy between traditional yoga practices and ancient healing systems such as Sowa-Rigpa, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Homoeopathy, and Naturopathy.

Dr. Raghavendra Rao, Director of the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy, New Delhi, was the Chief Guest. The Guests of Honour included Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena, Founder of MIMC; Dr. Tashi Thinlas, Director, Health UT Ladakh; and Dr. Satya Lakshmi, Director, National Institute of Naturopathy, Pune.

Dr. Padma Gurmet, Director of NISR, welcomed the participants and shared an overview of the institute’s initiatives to promote yoga and integrative healthcare.

Experts from ten states across India participated. The event featured presentations on the scientific evidence behind yoga’s benefits. Key speakers included Dr. Amit Kanthi from Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthan, Bengaluru; Ms. Nityatara Raina, Yoga Therapist from Mumbai; Lt. Col. Rahul Manral from High Altitude Medical Research Centre, Leh; and Dr. Phuntsog Angchok, President of Arogya Bharati Ladakh.

Lectures on Sowa-Rigpa were delivered by Dr. (Prof.) Nawang Tangais, Dr. (Prof.) Tsering Thakchoe, and Dr. Pasang Dolma from NISR.

Aligned with the IDY 2025 theme “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” the event emphasized the importance of integrating yoga into holistic health frameworks to promote physical, mental, and environmental well-being. The collaboration between MIMC and NISR highlighted Ladakh’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote traditional healing sciences in contemporary contexts.
