CEC, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, attended the Mega Kisan Mela organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)-1, Kargil, at Kurbathang on September 4.

The CEC visited stalls set up by Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and government departments showcasing organic vegetables, agricultural tools, and equipment. He interacted with SHG members, inquired about their income generation, subsidies received, and listened to their feedback and concerns.

Senior Scientist Dr. Nasreen Fatima and her team briefed the gathering during the Field Day on Corn, highlighting the nutritional value of sweet corn cultivated in Kargil, its potential for annual income generation, and its use as animal fodder. The CEC was also updated on Codling Moth management, cultural practices, and their historical relevance in the region.

In his address, Dr. Akhoon underscored the importance of integrated agricultural practices. He said such events bring him personal satisfaction as they directly benefit farmers. Stressing the value of organic produce in today’s era of adulterated foods, he noted that locally grown organic products are vital for health as well as financial sustainability.

Calling farmers the “pillars of society,” the CEC assured that LAHDC Kargil remains committed to extending maximum support, including subsidies on seeds, fodder, and agricultural equipment. He highlighted that apricots and apples from Kargil are already being exported abroad and expressed optimism that vegetables, particularly mushrooms, would also soon reach international markets. He extended gratitude to KVK Kargil-1, Agriculture, and Horticulture Departments for their efforts.

On the occasion, Dr. Nazir, Scientist at KVK Kargil-1, explained the objectives of the Mela and encouraged farmers to spread awareness about government schemes and the economic potential of organic produce. District Agriculture Officer Razia Khatoon motivated SHGs and farmers to adopt integrated farming practices, work towards self-reliance, and participate in the upcoming Agriculture Mela.
