L-G Kavinder Gupta seeks enhanced air connectivity for Ladakh

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, called on Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, in New Delhi on August 20 and discussed key issues related to improving air connectivity in the Union Territory.
The Lt Governor strongly advocated for the operationalisation of air services from Kargil and Thoise (Nubra) under the RCS–UDAN scheme, stressing that these areas remain cut off for much of the year due to harsh terrain and prolonged road closures. He noted that the existing IAF-operated winter services under Operation Sadbhavana are limited in capacity and primarily cater to emergency travellers, students, and patients, leaving most residents with few options.
Highlighting the urgent need for sustainable connectivity, the Lt Governor urged the Ministry to facilitate fixed-wing operations with turboprop aircraft (up to 50 seats). He proposed conducting a table-top feasibility exercise at Kargil Airport with the participation of MoCA, DGCA, AAI, and other stakeholders to finalise operational standards, aircraft categories, and pilot requirements for regular services.
The Lt Governor also flagged the issue of high airfares on existing routes to Ladakh, calling for a fair regulatory mechanism to ensure affordable travel for both residents and visitors.
Another major point of discussion was the speedy completion of the new terminal at Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, Leh, which he said is crucial for meeting rising passenger traffic and boosting Ladakh’s overall connectivity.
The Union Minister assured full cooperation from the Ministry, affirming the government’s commitment to strengthening air services for the people of Ladakh.
