EC Tashi Namgyal Yakzee assesses flash flood damage in Maan and Merak villages

Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, accompanied by Councillor and Mandal President of Chushul, Ven. Konchok Tsephel, visited Maan and Merak villages on August 13 to assess the devastation caused by the recent flash floods.
The calamity struck on the night of August 12 at around 10:45 PM after a massive thunderstorm near Pangong Lake. Heavy rainfall triggered sudden flash floods that caused widespread destruction—submerging agricultural lands, damaging several houses, and washing away critical infrastructure including irrigation canals and roads.
During his visit, EC Yakzee met with affected families, listened to their concerns, and inspected the damaged sites. Expressing deep concern over the losses, he assured that the Hill Council will take all necessary steps to provide relief and rehabilitation.
He committed that compensation will be provided for loss of agricultural land and property. For families from economically weaker sections whose homes were destroyed, he further assured immediate financial assistance and rehabilitation support.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Maan and Merak during this difficult time. The administration will ensure timely relief, and efforts are already underway to restore basic services and infrastructure,” said EC Yakzee.
He also acknowledged the swift response of the Indian Army, commending their crucial role in assisting villagers during and after the disaster, and thanked them for safeguarding lives and supporting relief efforts.
The visit concluded with EC Yakzee directing the SDM Durbuk and concerned departments to expedite damage assessment reports and begin restoration work at the earliest. He reaffirmed that the Hill Council remains committed to supporting the affected communities and facilitating their recovery in every possible way.
