Bhutan delegation explores collaboration with National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa in Leh

As part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between Bhutan’s traditional Sowa-Rigpa medicine system and the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR), a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Health, Government of Bhutan, visited NISR, Leh, on September 8–9, 2025.
Senior officials from Bhutan’s Traditional Medicine Division (TMD) held detailed discussions with the Director and officers of NISR on expanding collaborative projects, academic exchanges, and training opportunities for Sowa-Rigpa students.
The Bhutanese delegation included Kencho Wangdi, CPO, TMD, MoH; Tandin Chogyal, Program Analyst, TMD, MoH; Tshering Tenzin, CEO, Menjong Sorig Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited; Drg. Karma Galey, Medical Superintendent, National TM Hospital; Drg. Tendey Wangdi, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Traditional Medicine; and Phuntsho Wangdi, Menpa, Wangdue Hospital.
The delegation also interacted with Sowa-Rigpa experts from various Indian institutions. A key proposal discussed was the formation of a Sowa-Rigpa Association at the Asian and global levels to foster dialogue on preservation, promotion, and development of the traditional system for the well-being of humanity.
During their visit, the officials toured the Trans-Himalayan Herbal Garden of NISR to study best practices in cultivating Himalayan medicinal plants. They also extended an invitation to the Director and officers of NISR to visit Bhutan and further strengthen bilateral cooperation in advancing Sowa-Rigpa medicine.
