15kW solar power plant inaugurated at Urgo Phobrang

A 15kW solar power plant was inaugurated at Urgo Phobrang on September 9, marking a major step towards sustainable energy in one of Ladakh’s remote villages. The project has been implemented by Himmotthan Society with support from its funding partner, HDFC Bank Parivartan.
Chushul Councillor Konchok Stanzin, who graced the ceremony as Chief Guest, said renewable energy is vital for improving living standards in border villages and reducing dependency on conventional sources. He praised HDFC Bank Parivartan and Himmotthan Society for executing projects in the Durbuk block despite the challenges of short working seasons and extreme weather.
Stanzin also highlighted ongoing initiatives in the region, including natural resource management, smart schools, animal health camps, high-value crop promotion, and greenhouse activities.
Others present at the ceremony included Nambardar Konchok Lakdan, Line Man Sonam Stobgyas, Project Officer Stanzin Lakdan, and Junior Engineer Rigzen Norbu of Himmotthan Society, who played key roles in executing the project.
With the commissioning of the solar plant, Urgo village will now have reliable lighting and improved energy access, enabling households and community activities during evening hours.
The project is expected to significantly improve quality of life while promoting clean energy and self-reliance in the remote border area.
