Workshop on ‘Updation of District Disaster Management Plan’ held in Leh
Focus should be on disaster preparedness and mitigation rather thandisaster response, says Avny Lav

To update District Disaster Management Plan and preparedness to mitigate disaster two-day training cum workshop on ‘Updation of District Disaster Management Plan'  held on August 30 and 31 at DC conference hall.

The program was organised under Comprehensive school study (CSS) on Sustainable Reduction in Disaster Risk by Institute of Management and Public Administration (IMPA), Srinagar.

About 45 participants from different organisation including Sonam Dorjey, Dy. SP SDRF, Mohammad Sharif, Headquarter Assistant, DC Office, officers from Airforce Leh, HODs and representatives from various departments, representatives from civil society, NGOs and Jawans of SDRF Leh attended.

Moses Kunzang, ADC, Leh chaired the first-day training. He appreciated IMPA, Srinagar headed by Dr. G.M Dar, Associate Professor, Centre for Disaster Management & Environmental Studies, (IMPA) for organising the workshop in Leh. And strongly urged upon the participants to take the workshop seriously as their valuable input and participation will prove very beneficial in updating of District Disaster Management Plan of Leh. 

Sharing the experiences of 2010 flash flood and recent flash flood at Saboo village, Moses Kunzang said that such training cum workshops on a regular basis are very important to improve our disaster management plan.

Talking about the District Disaster Management Plan of Leh he said that the district administration Leh conducts mock drills at district, sub-divisional and block level time to time.

“Leh is the only district in J&K State which has permanent emergency operation centre situated in the office complex of the Council Secretariat and district administration is trying hard to equip this centre with all required facilities," he added.

On the last day, Avny Lavasa, DC, Leh thanked IMPA for organising such an important training at Leh.

Talking about the vulnerability factors of Leh district especially flash flood, she said, “Our focus should be on disaster preparedness and mitigation rather than disaster response.” She hoped that such workshops will go long way in updating the District Disaster Management Plan of Leh.

Dr. Konchok Dolma, Assistant Professor, EJM College, Leh spoke on disaster and development in local context.

Dr. G.M Dar gave training on all the aspects of disaster preparedness and management. He said that during the training all the participants have gone through the District Disaster Management Plan document of Leh in detail. They discussed and suggested points to update and improve the District Disaster Management Plan.
Later, certificates were distributed among the participants.
