NYK organises district sports meet, folk art and cultural festival in Leh

A day long district sports meet archery competition, folk art, and cultural festival, Yuva Keriti was organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra Leh on March 16 at Indoor stadium Leh.

Talking about women empowerment, CEC Dr. Sonam Dawa said that women at grass root levels can be empowered by providing new skills in handicraft sectors.

He said, “In future, every Saturday we will open a market in Leh main city where the rural people will sell their handicraft products. Such platform will help in income generation along with the importance of handmade products.”

He further added that it is also good to see that the women are working to protect the century-old handicrafts like the local basket, knitting woolen clothes made of local raw materials. 

Stanzin Wangmo giving an introductory speech said that the Nehru Yuva Kendra was set up in 1972 under the Ministry of Education. It is spread over 500 district level offices, 2.30 Lakh at village level and 80 Lakh rural youth enrolled and is affiliated with youth clubs and Mahila Mandals. 

She further added that annually NYKS trains over 56,000 youth leaders in various programs like youth club development program, vocational training, and training in self-employment, work camps, sports promotion program, promotion of adventure, workshops, and seminar, cultural program, youth conventions, local need based projects and disaster management cells.

A vocational Training Centre is being set up in villages with the aim to help the residents of the rural area.

Women training center members of Mahila Mandal Shara, Syedan Rangrok Tsogspa Phyang, Mentok Rangrok Tsogspa Skampari, Young Henechey Welfare Association and Vocational Training Centre Alchi were felicitated for their outstanding performances in handicraft productions.

In archery individual score, Mohd Tanvir (Stakmo) secured 168 points. Whereas Rigzin Tonyot (Alchi) secured 156 points and bagged the second position. In the third position, Tundup Tsering (Timisgam) secured 152 points.

Stakmo team bagged the first position with 504 points and Maan Merak held the second position with 416 points.
