Road safety awareness drive launched in Leh under National Road Safety Month 2026
As part of National Road Safety Month 2026, a Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan focusing on the implementation of the Zero Fatality Solution was launched at Singey Namgyal Chowk, Leh, on January 1 under the theme “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha.”
The month-long road safety campaign will be conducted across the district through awareness programmes, enforcement drives, and media outreach activities, and will conclude on January 31, 2026.
The initiative is being organised by the Motor Vehicles Department, UT Ladakh, in collaboration with the District Administration, Leh, with the objective of promoting road safety awareness and encouraging responsible behaviour among all road users.
The campaign was launched in the presence of Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Romil Singh Donk; Regional Transport Officer, Ladakh, Dr. Zahida Bano; Additional Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Ghulam Mohd; and Additional Superintendent of Police, Leh, Rigzen Sangdup, along with officers from the Traffic Police, DSP Traffic, NCC, and officials from various line departments.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of adhering to traffic rules, using safety gear such as helmets and seat belts, and sharing collective responsibility to reduce road accidents and fatalities. He stated that awareness, effective enforcement, and consistent communication through media are crucial to achieving the goal of zero road fatalities.
The Regional Transport Officer, Ladakh, stated that National Road Safety Month is being observed in both districts of UT Ladakh through coordinated efforts by concerned departments. She highlighted the importance of safe driving practices, avoidance of overspeeding and drunken driving, and strict compliance with traffic regulations, particularly in view of Ladakh’s challenging terrain and climatic conditions. She also underscored the role of print, electronic, and digital media in disseminating road safety messages.
During the drive, officials distributed information pamphlets, medals, and road safety materials among drivers and commuters. Vehicle checks were also conducted on private and passenger vehicles, with special emphasis on the use of seat belts, helmets, and other mandatory safety measures.
The campaign reflects the administration’s continued commitment to ensuring safer roads and protecting human lives across the district.
