Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Mohd Hanifa Jan, chaired a meeting with the Director General, Border Roads Organisation (DG BRO), Lieutenant General Harpal Singh, at the BRO Headquarters in Delhi on January 2 to discuss key developmental issues concerning the Drass region of Kargil.

During the meeting, several important infrastructure and livelihood-related matters were taken up. These included the proposed construction of the Drass–Gurez Road to enhance strategic as well as civilian connectivity, and the construction of bypass roads at Thasgam village and from Shimsa to Kharboo to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

The issue of enhancement of wages for labourers engaged in BRO works was also discussed, along with the need for greater engagement of local labour in ongoing and upcoming projects. The MP further highlighted the scope for construction of a tunnel from Dandal to Khumbathang to ensure all-weather connectivity in the region.

Concerns raised by Ladakh-based contractors, particularly regarding qualification and eligibility criteria in BRO works, were also deliberated upon during the meeting.

Responding to the issues raised, DG BRO Lieutenant General Harpal Singh assured that all concerns would be given due consideration and reiterated his commitment to extending full support for the overall development of the Drass region.

The meeting was described as constructive and forward-looking, with a shared emphasis on infrastructure development, employment generation, and regional growth.
