Ladakh unveils new Bhoti language textbooks for early education
In a major step toward preserving and promoting Ladakh’s linguistic heritage, new Bhoti language textbooks for Balvatika 1, 2, 3 and Grades 1 and 2 were officially launched on December 5. The ceremony took place at the Purple Studio of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Leh.
The event was graced by Chief Guest Bhanu Prabha (IAS), Administrative Secretary, School Education, UT Ladakh, and Guest of Honour Tashi Dolma (JKAS), Director, School Education, UT Ladakh. The launch was attended by eminent Bhoti language scholars, educators, and DIET faculty members.
The release marks a significant milestone in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Ladakh, which emphasizes mother-tongue-based foundational learning. The newly developed textbooks aim to provide young learners with a strong foundation in Bhoti language and script through age-appropriate, culturally rooted content.
The scholarly team behind the creation of these textbooks was led by Maryul Stanzin Nurbo, the principal designer. Their dedicated efforts, along with the support of DIET Leh faculty, were widely appreciated at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Bhanu Prabha expressed strong support for the initiative and praised the quality of work accomplished so far. She urged the team to extend textbook development up to Class 12 and to set a clear timeline to achieve this goal.
The event reaffirmed the UT Ladakh School Education Department’s commitment to strengthening linguistic identity, enriching classroom learning, and advancing a robust multilingual education system across the region.
