Assessment camp held in Leh to boost livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities
To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the District Social Welfare Office, Leh, organised an assessment camp–cum–pre-event activity aimed at helping Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) access meaningful placement and livelihood opportunities across various sectors.
The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the All Ladakh Guesthouse & Hotel Association (ALGHA), Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI) Leh, and other partner organisations in Ladakh.
The event was graced by Administrative Secretary, Social & Tribal Welfare Department, Shashanka Ala, accompanied by the Director, Social & Tribal Welfare Department, Kunzes Angmo; District Social Welfare Officer, Mohd Safdar Bhat; and representatives from civil society organisations, including PAGIR and Munsel Society. Their participation highlighted the administration’s strong focus on empowerment, accessibility, and social inclusion for PwDs across the UT.
The camp served as a vital platform where participants received assessments, counselling, and guidance on future opportunities. Officials and representatives from the hospitality industry, skill development institutes, and self-employment agencies interacted directly with PwDs to understand their interests and help identify suitable job roles, training programmes, and avenues for small business development.
Secretary Ala also spent time engaging with children and young participants, listening to their needs and aspirations. She spoke to parents and caregivers about ensuring proper training, learning facilities, and a supportive environment that enables children with disabilities to grow confidently and independently.
She further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating more inclusive workplaces in Ladakh, strengthening coordination with NGOs and community groups, and building long-term support systems that ensure the wellbeing and empowerment of persons with disabilities across the region.
