Ladakh Polo Festival concludes, LSRC Red lift Champion trophy

With the performance of Apo Ape, traditional dances and final match of Polo between LSRC Red and Animal Husbandry Department, the Ladakh Polo Festival concluded on July 17 at Shagaran, Chuchot Gongma.

Col. N.J Singh, Commandant Officer, LSRC, Leh was the chief guest.

In the final polo match, LSRC Red defeated Animal Husbandry Department by 7/3.
Appreciating the remarkable initiative of Indus Chuchot Polo Club for organising polo festival and preserving the traditional sports of Ladakh, Col. N.J Singh said that this festival not only provides opportunities for social gatherings but also an effort to preserve old culture, tradition and custom of Chuchot as well as Ladakh.

“As we know that Polo is the traditional game of Ladakh and in our regiment, we are trying our best to upgrade these traditional games. We identify the locals who are talented in this sport, recruit them and provide training to play not only in Ladakh but at national and international level. I am happy that we have got a good team and in future, we will find out more such players to upgrade this sport at a high level. "

Thrilled to watch the Polo match for the first time in Ladakh, Sophie, a tourist said that he found the match amazing and interesting. He said, “I got to see the traditional dance, dress and culture of Ladakh at one place.”

Tundup Dorjey, President Indus Chuchot Polo Club said, “This is the second time we are organising Polo Festival in Chuchot. The main aim is to promote village tourism along with polo game and culture.”

“Keeping in mind the last year’s huge polo spectators for the final match, we have developed the ground as well as the seating area.  In the coming years we have a plan to develop and make it more equipped”, he said. 

Mohd. Abbas, Animal Husbandry Officer said that this polo festival also helps and promoting in rearing and protecting the best breed of Zanskari pony. 

Mohd. Ibrahim, a player of LSRC Red said, “We are happy that we won the match by 7/3. Apart from this, we have played at national levels in Jaipur, Calcutta, Lucknow and performed best in almost all the matches. We are planning to participate in Kargil Vijay Diwas and hope for best results and we have been winning continuously from 2009.”
Runner up teams, sponsors and supporters were also felicitated in the end.
