Farmers of Changthang receive training on integrated pest management
By Reach Ladakh Correspondent, Tuesday, August 1, 2017

A training programme on 'Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in vegetable cropS' was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nyoma (SKUAST-K) on July 25 in Tsaga, KVK Nyoma.

The training was organized under the guidance of Dr. Maheshwar Singh, Sr. Scientist cum Programme coordinator.

Jigmet Laskit, Programme Assistant, discussed various types of insects and pests infesting vegetable crops in Changthang region. She emphasised on the control but not on complete eradication, as wiping out an entire pest population is somewhat impossible, unsafe and uneconomical.

She stressed on preventive cultural control methods, monitoring of the pest population by use of mechanical devices like light traps, sticky traps and responsible use of pesticides when needed.

Dr. Maheshwar urged the farmers to take up scientific skills in farming by attending such need based training in future.  He also encouraged the farmers to take part in other skill development training during lean periods of winter for enhancing their income.

Free veterinary medicines for their livestock were also distributed on the occasion.
